About Lab
“The power plants are our energy of future. It’s so powerful. That mean, it is the power of the stars. If we could bring that down to the laboratory and to the power plant on Earth that would be an incredible thing”
The power plant engineering laboratory is established to impart experiment and skill based learning to the students. The laboratory is equipped with experimental set up of Steam Turbine Test Rig with Non-IBR Boiler having 1 KW capacity. The test rig consists of suitable accessories for performing experiments to measure steam turbine efficiency, steam quality and flow rate and condenser effectiveness.
This laboratory utilized to conduct trial on steam power plant for second year and final year mechanical engineering students. Also, students can use this facility for their final year projects on waste heat recovery. This lab is also utilized by providing a facility to conduct trial on steam power plant for various Engineering colleges in pune, in a batch of 20 students.
Three different experiments can be performed on same setup like, determination of dryness fraction of steam, Trial on boiler to determine boiler efficiency, equivalent evaporation and energy balance and trial on steam power plant to determine plant efficiency, Heat Rate and Incremental Heat Rate.
Objective of Lab
The main objective of the Power Plant Engineering lab is,
- To impart experiment and skill based learning to the students in the field of Power Plant Engineering.
- To create awareness and disseminate information on energy efficiency and conservation amongst students.
- To study operation and maintenance problems of Power Stations.
- To understand working of boiler, generator, turbine and condenser.
- Energy Conservation in power plants and improvements in efficiencies of combustion auxiliaries and interconnected systems.
