Objective of workshop: | The primary objective of the “One-Day Workshop on Underground Electrical Cables” was to provide in-depth knowledge and hands-on experience regarding underground electrical cable systems, their types, uses, installation, maintenance, and safety standards. The workshop aimed to bridge the gap between theoretical learning and practical industry applications, especially for students and budding engineers. |
Event Overview:
The workshop commenced with a warm welcome by Mr. Chaitanya Deshpande, Asst. Prof, Department of Electrical Engineering. The opening address highlighted the importance of underground cables in modern electrical systems, particularly in urban infrastructure, industries, and large-scale power distribution projects.
Keynote Session:
The keynote speaker, Mr. Pradeep Ramrakhiani, Executive Director at Ravin Cables Limited, Pune, shared his vast industry experience of 36 years. He emphasized the crucial role of underground cables in ensuring uninterrupted power supply and safety in various sectors, including EHV (Extra High Voltage) projects, solar power installations, and power distribution. Mr. Ramrakhiani also spoke about the advancements in cable technology, focusing on improvements in insulation materials and the impact of environmental factors on cable performance.
Technical Sessions:
The workshop featured three technical sessions covering the following topics:
Session 1: Basic Electrical Equipment ( Generation, Transmission and Distribution)
Introduction – Electrical Cables (Theory and Principles)
Different Types of Electrical Cables & Applications
Voltage Grades
Basic Components & Materials Cables & wires, its significance
Cables Manufacturing process
Session 2: Understanding – Power Cables and Wires
Voltage Grades, Construction, Specifications and Standards, Comparison XLPE Vs PVC insulated cables, FR, FRLS, LSZH and FS cables.
Selection of Cables – Sizing and Rating
Short Circuit Conditions, Continuous currents carrying capacity
Site – Cables Handling, Laying, Installation, Pre- Commissioning Checks for Cables.
Session 3: Tests on Cables:
1. Factory Tests.
2. Site Tests (Pre and After Commissioning).
Effect of overloading – Electrical and Mechanical, General maintenance practices and diagnostic tests, General Cable Faults and Fault Location,
The workshop concluded with a vote of thanks from the organizing team. The participants expressed their gratitude for the valuable insights gained during the day, especially regarding the practical aspects of underground cable systems. Overall, the event was highly successful in enhancing the knowledge and skill sets of the attendees, preparing them for the challenges in the electrical engineering industry.
