Conception of Welding Excellence Lab
Welding is a very vast Engineering subject which covers the creation of a simple fabrication structure like gate, from underwater welding to spacecraft components and the practice of welding is basic to building infrastructure in the country. It has different levels of complexities depending on whether it is used in power plants, railway coaches, aircrafts or spacecraft. This offers an opportunity for the engineers, and the welders, not only to learn about the welding skills, but also learn about the process of welding, and how it can be managed and improved, and new fabrication practices for complex materials.
The governments ‘Make in India’ initiative has attracted large amounts of foreign investments to the country with a specific focus on manufacturing. Through this initiative the government hopes to increase contribution of the manufacturing sector to 25% of the GDP. The welding industry is growing with 28% per year.
An average salary of welder in India is Rs 240,000 per year. While in euro countries its 35 dollars per hour, and 1.5 lac per month in gulf countries. The every second job seeker in gulf is a welder. Welding professionals and welding technology at large is perfectly poised to benefit from this opportunity.

Objective of Lab
To provide students a well equipped lab to keep themselves up-to-date and alive in order to seek new frontiers of best welding skills, this will make our students thirsty for more knowledge beyond the realms of our classroom teaching.

Through welding Proficiency Improvement hands-on the students are intended with following outcomes
- Through imparted with various skill-sets in fabrication of all-terrain vehicle (ATV) like design, endurance, and testing etc.
- Understanding design of roll cage, vehicle built quality and failure analysis
- Understanding of weld design joints
- Learning ISO standards for raw materials and applicable process for race car manufacturing
- Understanding Metallurgy of welding process and their NDT
- Understanding welding defects, remedies and methods to detect them
- Understand the welding techniques, process parameters, weld symbols, position and its design
- Understand the power source of welding and its influence on the design
- Demonstrate independent learning ability necessary for seeking professional development
Making Effective Use of Welding Simulators
Welding and piloting have a set of common features. Both processes imply tight physical – psychological coordination. Flying a plane or doing a weld demands physical reaction as much as they require judgment and intellectual activity. Some abilities, like the speed of reaction and the hand – eye coordination become crucial for the impact and quality of output. Both disciplines assume very good knowledge and understanding of tools and process before actual practice, and require a high number of hours of exercise to build a good professional. Pilot trainers assert that students, by the time they start practice on a real aircraft, ideally should have a good basic understanding of the goals of a particular lesson. In the airplane, they should practice and refine skills that they already understand, at least at a fundamental level.
Changing over from this welding to actual welding becomes extremely easy. In Virtual Simulator no arc is experienced, hence change over is difficult. Through sensor the skills such as Arc length, angle and tracking of the arc is measured by software and gives valuation of his skill compare to the set standard. Operator has to go on practicing till he gets 100% to the set standard.
Thus it is self teaching, no instructors are required, and no big set up is required.
