A. Overview:

The Department of Electrical Engineering of ZES, ZCOER, Pune has organized Faculty development programme organized on the subject, Energy audit & electrical safety (SY B Tech Sem II) on 13/01/2026 for the faculty of the Electrical Engineering Department. This session was conducted on 13th  Jan 2026 from 11.00 am to 1.00 pm in Conference room, C-211. The session is conducted to provide detailed information and guidance to faculty about preparation for content delivery and syllabus elaboration of the subject ‘Energy audit and Electrical Safety’ to be taught to SY B Tech Sem II.

The expert speaker, Aniket Datar is a 2012 passed out alumnus of PVG’s COET.  He started his own company few years ago, named Datar Electricals, which deals with the projects in Services- Energy Conservation audits, Electrical Safety audits, Thermography Services, Power Quality audit, Fire audits, Verification study, Standards- British Indian Standards (BIS), Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Indian Standard (IS), National Building code (NBC), National Fire Protection Act (NFPA), CEA (Central Electricity Authority), Harmonics (IEEE 519), Safety (IS 732, IS 3043), energy conservation, green energy, battery impedance testing, battery maintenance, Electrical Design- SLD, Power Flow Design, (UPS, Panel & DB) Design, Conduit layout, Fixture Layout.

He is already associated with the department through providing internships of students and delivering expert session.

The key points discussed in the session were as follows.

1. Understanding of Basic concepts is necessary:

  • Difference in earthing & Grounding.
  • Introduction to basic switchgears
  • Difference in RCB, RCCB, ELCB, their ratings
  • ( why 16 A?) and their applications.

2. Study of relevant IS Codes is crucial:

  • All teachers were advised to go through NBC & IS Codes.
  • Amendment in Electricity act 2001which is published in 2022.
  • NBC
  • IS Code 3043 & 732.

3. Case studies must be included in Unit 3 & 4:

  • Case studies in industry will be shared by Mr. Aniket Datar to be shared with students while explaining the content of these units.
  • In one of the case studies, he explained how improving the power factor from 0.85 to 0.99 incurred in loss of 5 Crores which otherwise would’ve resulted in a penalty of just few lacs.

4. Introduction to Electrical safety should cover:

  • Hazards Risk assessment (HRA) should be discussed with students
  • Importance of PPE(Personal Protective Equipment)
  • Code for Insulating Mats: 15652
  • Code for Safety Shoes: 4770

5. Following points must be discussed in Unit 6:

  • Occupational Health Safety
  • Why open/entangled cables should be avoided?

6. Unit 3 should include clean energy production:

  • Amendment in Energy conservation act in 2022.
  • Carbon footprint with live examples

7. Unit 4 should include discussion on:

  • Bureau of Energy Efficiency.
  • Location of capacitors
  • Energy auditor & energy Manager.
  • Process control panel & Motor control panel & panel drawing.

8. Illumination Engineering study must be included in the discussion :

  • Illumination study should be at least partially discussed as the subject is an elective subject in Final year
  • Ventilation & illumination are two important  factors in Safety issues (OSHA).

9. Promoting Renewable energy is the need of the hour:

  • Use of renewable energy should be stressed upon and carbon credit should also be included in discussion in class.
  • Net zero emission should be well elaborated in class.
  • Prior approval of the Principal shall be obtained for the travel and accommodation charges of the resource persons.

10. Single line diagrams (Reading & drawing):

  • Students should be well versed with the single line diagrams. This includes the schematic symbols used, spare feeders & additional load markings etc.
  • Analysis of Single line diagram should be discussed in class.

11. Understanding & implementing of LOTO:

  • Students should be well versed with LOTO. Isolation of machines at the time of maintenance is done using LOTO (Lock Out Tag Out) in industry.

12. Industrial visit to any Switchgear industry:

  • The switchgears of ABB, Schneider should be seen by students at this stage through an industry visit.

13. Renewable energy: Solar/ wind/ Bio-Mass:

  • The teaching should be activity based.
  • For a place like Leh Ladakh, which one will be most suitable?.
  • Case studies should be discussed on energy policies

14. Connecting the dots through proper flow:

  • The contents of this subject should be easily mapped with the contents of EIDCBM, SGP and Illumination Engineering.
  • Practical & live examples will make the subject more interesting for the students

Prof. Bhagyashri Sherkhane elaborated on the newly constructed SY B Tech syllabus of Energy audit and electrical safety and noted down all the suggestions received from the industry experts. The entire department faculty attended the session actively. The whole event was coordinated successfully.
