“400 kV MSETCL Substation Lonikand I”, Pune

Introduction: –

As part of the Electrical Installation Design and Condition-Based Maintenance (EIDCBM) course, we visited a “400 kV MSETCL Substation Lonikand I”, Pune on 31/10/2025 located at Lonikand, Pune – 412216. The purpose of this visit was to gain practical knowledge about the physical layout and arrangement of key components such as power transformers, circuit breakers, current and potential transformers, isolators, lightning arresters, and busbars. During the visit, we accompanied by Rajesh V. Amberwadikar 400kV R.S (O&M) Division, Lonikand-I  (Executive Engineer), who provided valuable insights and explanations about the substation’s components and functions. The visit lasted for 2-3 Hour, during which we had the opportunity to observe the substation’s layout, equipment, and safety measures.

Need of visit: –

The industrial visit to the 400 kV MSETCL Substation, Lonikand I, Pune, was organized to provide students with practical exposure to real-world electrical installation and maintenance practices in high-voltage power systems. While theoretical knowledge of substation design, operation, and maintenance is covered in the EIDCBM syllabus, on-site observation is essential to understand the actual functioning of equipment and systems.

This visit aimed to bridge the gap between classroom learning and industrial application by allowing students to:

  • Observe large-scale electrical installations and their design considerations.
  • Understand the practical aspects of condition-based maintenance techniques.
  • Learn about safety measures, control systems, and protection mechanisms in substations.
  • Gain awareness of modern technologies such as SCADA and automation used in power system operation.
  • Gain insights into the safety practices and procedures followed in the substation to ensure the safety of personnel and equipment.
  • Understand the importance of regular maintenance and testing of substation equipment to ensure reliable and efficient power supply.
